2013 D.W. Brooks Award for Excellence in Research

Department: Poultry Science

Sammy Aggrey has been with the Department of Poultry Science since the spring of 2000. His research interests include mapping poultry genes for growth and development, microRNA predictions and NutriGenomics. His research program has been supported mostly by external competitive grants from the USDA and industry organizations.

Aggrey established a world-class program in NutriGenomics, an emerging field that researches the interaction between nutrient utilization and the genome.

He is a member of the Institute of Bioinformatics and trained the first Ph.D. graduate of the bioinformatics program.

Aggrey co-edited the definitive text “Poultry Genetics, Breeding and Biotechnology” and has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and conference proceedings. He regularly speaks on the molecular basis of nutrient and feed utilization, globally.

Born in Ghana, Aggrey received his B.S. degree from the University of Ghana, his M.S. degree from the Wageningen University in the Netherlands and his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia in Canada. From 1998-2000 he worked as a research associate at McGill University.
