Patricia Moore
2019 D.W. Brooks Faculty Award for Excellence In Teaching
Patricia Moore
Professor and Senior Teaching Fellow, University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Department of Entomology
Patricia Moore has had a deep commitment to teaching reaching back to her first faculty appointment more than 25 years ago.
Moore serves a diverse range of students through her teaching responsibilities — from gateway introductory biology to upper-level entomology to developing a course to increase graduate teaching assistants' awareness of teaching philosophy, practice and professional development.
Moore was instrumental in “flipping” the introductory biology class she teaches to change how we teach science to include and encourage all students, especially women and historically underrepresented groups to pursue scientific careers. Moore also serves as an informal mentor to many women and minority students through her interactions with the Minority Science Student Alliance.
Students in Moore’s introductory biology classes consistently give her the highest average ratings for teaching on student evaluations. Even when suggesting improvements to the class, students are glowing in their praise for Moore:
“I like how Dr. Moore used real life examples to help us not only understand the content but also to understand how it can be used in the real world, so I feel like what we're learning has some meaning and importance to it.”
“She is kind, funny and open to helping her students. She even encourages students to explore each topic in further depth, which not many lecturers try to do, and which shows how much she cares about her students.”
“Dr. Moore rocks.”
Moore’s exceptional teaching and mentoring, not only to her students, but to colleagues seeking insight on challenging classroom scenarios, has earned her fellowships including the Center for Teaching and Learning Senior Teaching Fellowship, the University of Georgia Center for Teaching and Learning Fellowship for Innovative Teaching, a UGA National Academy Education Fellowship in the Life Sciences, a Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship, and fellowships in the Higher Education Academy, the Omicron Delta Kappa Honorary Society and the American Cancer Society.
